The newly appointed Commissioner of Police in charge of the Lagos Ports, Ibrahim Balarake Maikaba, psc+, brings over three decades of experience in law enforcement, intelligence, and border security to his new role. His extensive career in the Nigeria Police Force, spanning strategic leadership, community policing, and international peacekeeping, positions him as a formidable force in tackling security challenges at the nation’s busiest maritime hub.
Maikaba, an alumnus of Bayero University, Kano, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics in 1992, joined the Nigeria Police Force in 1994 as a cadet Assistant Superintendent. Over the years, he has served in various operational, investigative, and administrative capacities across different states, earning commendations for his dedication and strategic approach to policing.
His background includes commanding border security operations at Maje, Kebbi State, and Seme, Lagos State—two critical points for trade and migration. As the head of the Inspector General of Police’s Special Taskforce on Petroleum and Illegal Bunkering, Maikaba spearheaded efforts to combat oil theft and related crimes, an experience that will be invaluable in addressing maritime security threats in Lagos.
A strong advocate of inter-agency collaboration, Maikaba is known for his ability to work with other security and regulatory agencies to maintain law and order. His training in community policing, which he received as part of the first set of Nigerian officers trained by the British, has shaped his approach to law enforcement—balancing proactive crime prevention with public engagement.
Beyond national assignments, Maikaba has served in United Nations peacekeeping missions in Kosovo (2001) and Sudan (2006), earning two UN commendation medals for his contributions to global peace. His leadership at the Police Staff College, Jos, and the Police College, Kaduna, also underscores his role in mentoring the next generation of police officers.
As he takes charge of security at Lagos ports, Maikaba is expected to bring his wealth of experience to bear in combating smuggling, illegal activities, and other security challenges in the maritime sector. With a reputation for leading from the front, he is poised to enhance safety and efficiency in Nigeria’s key economic gateway.
