The Evangelisers Team Ministry ( TETMI) has called on the Ebonyi state Government to intervene in the ongoing communal clashes in the state which has resulted in loss of lives , displacement of families and a General atmosphere of insecurity.
TETMI President, Rev. Dr. David Umene made this call in a letter to the Governor of Ebonyi state , Chief Francis Ogboma Nwifuru during the visit of the Ministry to the communities affected by the ongoing clash in the state.
“As a stakeholder in the Ebonyi Project by virture of our Missionary and development activities in the State and deeply invested in the peace and progress of our state, I respectfully urge your immediate intervention to restore peace and prevent further escalation.
Recent reports indicate that these clashes, often rooted in longstanding ethnic and land disputes, have intensified, leading to fatalities and widespread fear among the populace. The 2011 clashes between the Ezza and Ezilo peoples, which resulted in at least 50 deaths, serve as a grim reminder of the potential consequences of unresolved communal tensions in our state”– He said
Rev. Umune proposed the following measures for consideration by the Ebonyi State Government towards finding a lasting solutions to the clashes:
1. Establishment of a State-Level Peace and Reconciliation Committee: Comprising representatives from all affected communities, religious leaders, youth organizations, and civil society groups, this committee would serve as a platform for dialogue, conflict resolution, and the promotion of mutual understanding.
2. Issuing a strong statement condemning the violence and calling for an immediate cessation of hostilities by all parties involved.
3. Initiating a high-level peacebuilding process that brings together leaders, elders, and representatives of the affected communities for dialogue and mediation.
4. Enhanced Security Measures: Strengthening the presence of security agencies in volatile areas to prevent further violence and ensure the safety of all citizens.
5. Implementation of already made decisions, resolutions and or judgements already entered into by relevant authorities and bodies.
6. Public Awareness Campaigns: Launching state-wide campaigns to educate the populace on the dangers of ethnic intolerance and the importance of peaceful coexistence.
7. Support for Victims: Providing immediate humanitarian assistance to those affected by the clashes, including displaced persons, and facilitating their safe return to their communities.
As part of efforts to cushion the hunger and suffering created by the communal clashes, The Evangelisers Team Ministry international donated ₦2.5 million worth of food items and other materials to the indigenes of the affected communities who are predominantly farmers .
