The Tincan Island Port Command of Nigeria customs service has refutted misleading claims allegedly made by a 70-year-old US returnee, Mr. Olukayode David-Albert.
A statement issued and signed by Superintendent of customs and Public Relations Officer of the Tincan island port command of the NCS , Ngozi Okwara said
“The Command is setting the record straight regarding the alleged ₦76 million demanded to clear Mr. David-Albert’s two vehicles and personal belongings.
According to the ECOWAS Common External Tariff (CET) 2022–2026, Nigerian citizens who have resided outside Nigeria for at least nine months can import their personal belongings duty-free. However, this provision excludes vehicles or goods intended for sale, barter, or exchange .
In Mr. David-Albert’s case, while he is eligible to import his personal belongings duty-free, the two vehicles in his consignment are subject to duty payments.
The luxurious 2024 Hyundai SUV attracts an Import Duty rate of 20%, a levy of 20%, and a Value Added Tax (VAT) of 7.5%, totaling ₦34,969,374.00″
The Command categorically denies requesting ₦76 million from Mr. David-Albert and encourages him to provide evidence of such misconduct.
The statement added that the Nigeria Customs Service remains committed to upholding transparency, professionalism, and fairness in its operations.
